making soy candles Want to know more about them before you dive into making soy candles? No problem. Before you get started let’s take a closer look at the supplies you’ll need...Want to

  • Soy Wax… Soy wax comes in blocks or flakes. The flakes are easier to use because they melt faster. One pound of soy candle making wax will equal about 18 oz of liquid wax.

  • Fragrances…One ounce of fragrance will scent 16-18 oz of wax. Be creative when choosing your fragrances. Creating your own special scent is one of the joys of making candles. Candle making fragrance oil can be found in many places. Just be sure what you buy is Ok to use with candle wax.

  • Dye…Wax dyes come in different forms. The most common are wax blocks filled with concentrated color, liquids and dye chips. Start with a small amount and gradually increase the amount of dye you use. A little goes a long way and you can’t take it out once it’s in the pot!

  • Wicks…One of the most important things to do when making soy candles is to get the right size wicks. Remember the larger the candle the thicker your wick will need to be. The easiest wicks to use are the ones pre-waxed and in little metal cups so they’ll stand up in your container. Just be sure they are made stiff with WAX and NOT LEAD or ZINC WIRE inserts. You DON’T want to be breathing in any heavy metals!

  • Containers… There are many different containers available for candle making. For a country look use a simple Mason or Kerr jar. For a more sophisticated look use an apothecary jar. No matter what type of container you chose it must be clean, dry and at room temperature.
  • Ok, now that you know a little more about the things you’ll be using, it’s time to gather your soy candle making supplies supplies. Most can be found online or at any of the larger craft stores. Or if you prefer you can purchase a soy candle making kit.

Supplies you’ll need for Making Soy Candles…

  • 1 lb of soy wax
  • a mason jar or similar container
  • 1 oz fragrance oil
  • wax dye
  • 100% cotton wick
  • Making Soy Candles…Prepare your container. Set the wick in the middle of the container and hold it in place with a dab of wax on the bottom and a clothes pin or pencil across the top.

Melt your soy wax in a pan over medium heat. Melt it slowly and stir constantly. When melted remove from heat and add your fragrance and dye according to the manufacturers instructions. Stir well then pour the soy wax into your container.

Walk away and let it harden. When completely hard you can trim the wick to about ½ an inch. Light and enjoy!

So, as you can see making soy candles isn’t rocket science but it sure is fun! Have a good time and let me know how your candles turn out.
