What Are Soy Candles?

What makes Soy Candles different from other candles? How on earth do they make wax from a Soy Bean? Let's find out...

The simple answer is, they are made from Soy Wax. This is just hydrogenated soy bean oil. Soy Wax can stand alone or can also be blended with other waxes such as other Veggie wax or Bees Wax. Add colors, fragrances and a wick and...Voila! You have a soy Candle!

Don't know what hydrogenation is? It all still sounds Greek to you?

Ok...

Soy Beans for making soy candles First they squeeze the oil out of a pile of soy beans. Then, take the oil and add hydrogen to it. This process (called hydrogenation) turns liquid oil into a solid oil. This is the same process used to turn corn and other vegetable oils into shortening or margarine.

Now, instead of soy bean oil (liquid) you have Soy Wax (a solid). This is used in making candles and other products such as soap or lotion.

(For those of you who really want to know your history... Hydrogenation was invented by the French chemist Paul Sabatier in 1887. Michael Richards first applied the process to soy oil in 1992 and invented Soy Wax Candles. He realized there was a growing demand for Natural Candles and was looking for a cheaper alternative to bees wax.)

What does all this mean to you and your passion for burning candles?

Quite simply, scented soy wax candles are better for you, the environment and your pocket book. Some good examples are Caterpillar, EcoLight and my favorite the Mia Bella Gourmet Candle. Compaired to paraffin candles, they are...

  • Cleaner Burning. Burn with about 90% less soot. They protect your indoor air quality. You won't have to worry about sooty residue on your ceilings and furnishings or in your lungs.

  • Longer Lasting. Burns up to 50% longer than paraffin candles. Soy wax burns cooler, and therefore slower, than traditional paraffin. This makes them last longer.

  • Non-Toxic & Biodegradable. Less likely to trigger allergies.

  • Environmentally Friendly. Soy Wax is a Renewable Resource grown by American Farmers. Not a petroleum based product like paraffin candles.

  • Easy to Clean. Clean up easily with Soap and hot water.
  • And you don't have to take my word for it. Click here to see what Yahoo has to say about the benefits of soy wax. So, the bottom line is, Soy Wax makes better candles that are better for you and more economical than paraffin candles. I hope you can see that they are the better choice for your Home Based Candle Business.
